Fear of failure is believed to be one of the greatest fears amongst people. Fear of failure is associated with fear of rejection, and fear of criticism. Overcoming fear of failure can lead to a successful life. Unsuccessful people are harmed by fear of failure.
But the truth is, public failure is only feedback which successful people look at as an opportunity to learn from their mistakes. Only unsuccessful people look at mistakes as personal and permanent failure.
Buckminster Fuller once noted, “Whatever humans have learned had to be learned as a consequence only of trial and error experience. Humans have learned only through mistakes.”
Tips for overcoming and dealing with public failure
Take action even if it’s scary. Fear of failure can stop a person’s progress. Only action will help you overcome this fear.
Action provides you with the power to change the situation. Ask yourself, what would you do if you knew you could not fail? Would you be a success? Sometimes, you just have to be brave and do it. No big deal if it doesn’t work out the way you want. An advertising agency for example does it all the time. If their creative designs don’t attract enough buyers, they come up with new ones that do. Try something else, but try something, now!
Successful people are very persistent; they don’t just give up. They try different ways to achieve their desired outcomes. Unsuccessful people on the other hand try one thing and if it doesn’t work, they give up. It’s sad, because many people give up when they are on the verge of success.
Failure is about results. Don’t take it personally. Failure doesn’t define your personality. Just because you made a mistake, it doesn’t mean you are a bad person or a failure.
At some point in our lives we have to realize that certain things don’t work which means it’s time to do something else. An old saying states that if a person always does the same things, they will always get what they have gotten so far. If you’re unhappy about the results you are getting, then you must do things differently. Here is where the unsuccessful people stop, the successful, however, continue and find new ways.
Don’t beat yourself up if you fail. We are all human and there is always room for improvement. Realize it didn’t work and move on with your life.
Failure is a great opportunity to learn. Every time we fail, we get a chance to learn from the mistakes. Ask yourself how you can use this experience to improve the situation? You have two choices—learn from it or ignore it!
According to management guru, Tom Peters, today’s companies must fail forward fast. What Peters means is that we learn from mistakes. So the faster we want to learn, the faster we have to make mistakes. The key is to learn from mistakes and not to repeat them.
